Crispy, golden hand pies filled with a warm, spiced sweet potato filling and topped with a sweet glaze. A comforting treat!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 homemade pie crust recipe, or 2 boxes store-bought
  • 2 cups (240 g) mashed sweet potatoes
  • ¼ cup (50 g) light brown sugar, packed
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • canola oil, for frying
  • 3 cups (375 g) confectioners' sugar
  • 6-9 tablespoons whole milk

Instructions

  1. Add mashed sweet potatoes to a medium bowl.
  2. Stir in light brown sugar until fully combined.
  3. Stir in ground cinnamon until fully combined.
  4. Stir in ground nutmeg until fully combined.
  5. Set the sweet potato filling aside.
  6. Lightly flour a clean surface.
  7. Roll out the pie crust to ⅛-inch thick.
  8. Use a 4-5 inch round cookie cutter to cut the crust into rounds.
  9. Place 1 tablespoon of sweet potato filling onto the center of each round.
  10. Moisten the edges of each round with water.
  11. Fold each round in half to create a half-moon shape.
  12. Crimp the edges of each hand pie with a fork to seal.
  13. Set the assembled hand pies aside.
  14. Add 2-3 inches of canola oil to a medium pot.
  15. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 375°F.
  16. Carefully place 2-3 hand pies into the hot oil.
  17. Fry hand pies until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
  18. Remove fried hand pies from the oil.
  19. Transfer hand pies to a paper towel-lined baking sheet to drain.
  20. Check oil temperature to ensure it is 375°F before frying the next batch.
  21. Repeat frying with remaining hand pies.
  22. Whisk together confectioners' sugar and 6 tablespoons of whole milk in a small bowl.
  23. Add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, if needed, until the glaze is pourable.
  24. Coat each warm hand pie with the glaze.

Notes

Always use a thermometer to maintain the oil temperature at 375°F for best results.
Do not overcrowd the pot when frying; cook in batches.
Ensure pie crust edges are well-sealed with water and crimped to prevent filling from leaking.
Glaze the hand pies while they are still warm for optimal adhesion and shine.
