A delightful and comforting apple crisp featuring a tender, spiced apple filling and a crunchy, nutty topping, all made with Paleo-friendly ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6-7 large apples (I used 3 Honeycrisp and 3 Granny Smith peeled, cored, and sliced)
  • 2 tsp arrowroot powder or tapioca starch
  • 2 tsp fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • ⅓ cup coconut sugar
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp allspice
  • ⅓ cup cashews
  • ⅓ cup almonds
  • ⅓ cup pecans
  • 3 pitted dates
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • ¼ cup shredded coconut
  • 2 tbsp ghee or coconut oil – solid at room temp
  • pinch sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spray a 9×9 inch casserole dish with cooking spray (like coconut oil).
  3. Add the peeled, cored, and sliced apples to a large bowl.
  4. Add the arrowroot powder or tapioca starch to the bowl with the apples.
  5. Add the fresh squeezed lemon juice to the bowl.
  6. Add the coconut sugar to the bowl.
  7. Add the maple syrup to the bowl.
  8. Add the cinnamon to the bowl.
  9. Add the nutmeg to the bowl.
  10. Add the allspice to the bowl.
  11. Mix all the filling ingredients well until the apples are evenly coated.
  12. Set the apple filling aside.
  13. Add the cashews to a food processor.
  14. Add the almonds to the food processor.
  15. Add the pecans to the food processor.
  16. Add the pitted dates to the food processor.
  17. Add the chia seeds to the food processor.
  18. Add the shredded coconut to the food processor.
  19. Add the ghee or coconut oil to the food processor.
  20. Add a pinch of sea salt to the food processor.
  21. Pulse the food processor a few times until the mixture resembles coarse granola.
  22. Pour the prepared apple filling into the casserole dish.
  23. Spread the apple filling evenly in the dish.
  24. Sprinkle the topping mixture evenly over the apples.
  25. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the apples are cooked through and the topping is golden brown.
  26. Serve warm, optionally topped with dairy-free ice cream or whipped cream.
  27. Enjoy!

Notes

Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for the best flavor balance.
Do not over-process the topping; you want it to be crumbly, not a paste.
If the topping browns too quickly, loosely tent the dish with foil.
Let the crisp cool for a few minutes before serving for easier scooping.
